VISION
“It is our intention to work closely with the right partners on the ground, to ensure we truly do deliver a long-term sustainable educational facility that will form part of a ‘new Haiti’”.
An estimated 80% of buildings in the heart of the capital’s downtown area were destroyed by the January 12 earthquake that struck Haiti. Some 4,000 schools and 30,000 classrooms have been destroyed in a 40km zone around Port-au-Prince. This is catastrophe on the most terrible of scales and as always in a disaster zone the young are among the worst affected.
Through Hand in Hand for Haiti, the travel retail industry – a true, instantly definable global business community – is playing a small but significant role in making Haiti great again. That is not meant to sound grandiose but is simply a statement of intent. And we will start by helping the country’s children…
Hand in Hand for Haiti, the pan-industry initiative designed to help the reconstruction efforts in Haiti, is raising funds to build new primary school facilities.
We must work with local partners and together create an educational institution that is part of a coherent community development programme that will ultimately embrace and link with areas such as vocational skills training, medical services, investment and job creation.
